What You Need to Know About Breast Implant Recalls

To many women, breast implants seem like a very safe procedure. Although there are some risks associated with any surgery, most people think they’re in the clear once they leave the doctor’s office. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

Breast implants can result in very serious health complications. Reports of breast implant illness have increased significantly over the last several years. In addition, breast implants have also been connected to certain forms of cancer – and even death.

This year, news of breast implant recalls have hit the headlines and many patients and medical professionals are concerned..

In July, Allergan, a large pharmaceutical company, voluntarily recalled its BIOCELL textured implants. However, BIOCELL implants aren’t the only ones that can pose serious health risks.

Breast Implants Have Been Linked to Cancer

BIOCELL implants were initially pulled after research discovered that they may be responsible for a rare type of cancer that impacts the immune system.

The illness has since been named Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). However, BIA-ALCL isn’t just associated with BIOCELL implants (although reports indicate they are the main culprit).

The disease has been associated with other textured silicone and saline implants.

Symptoms of BIA-ALCL include the following:

  • Breast pain
  • Breast enlargement
  • Lump in breast or armpit
  • Hardened breasts
  • Fluid build up

According to The FDA, “the risk of BIA-ALCL with Allergan BIOCELL textured implants is approximately 6 times the risk of BIA-ALCL with textured implants from other manufacturers marketing in the U.S. and continued distribution of Allergan’s BIOCELL textured breast implants would likely cause serious, adverse health consequences, including death, from BIA-ALCL.”

There have been 573 reported incidents of BIA-ALCL across the world with 481 of them coming from people with breast implants from Allergen. Of those 481 cases, there have been 12 deaths.
